If you’ve been around young kids, you know that they like to stay active. They constantly explore, dig, run, jump, pick up things, and experiment with the world around them. But alas, all that activity has to be constantly supervised, and it’s terribly inconvenient for busy parents! Enter electronic devices… they keep kids still, safe, and in a convenient state of semi-coma.
However, research shows that kids need plenty of movement every day, well past their toddler years! When they don’t, look out! They are cranky, demanding, and unpredictable – their energy frustrated.
Let’s remind ourselves, then, what’s the key to cooperative behavior, physical health, and cognitive ability?
Exercise!
That’s right. It’s not just about muscles and endurance – it’s about the mind and heart.
With time often in short supply, however, parents and educators need to make that daily movement count with effective moves. In the quest for physical and mental health, even a few minutes of physical activity each day can make a difference.
It may be helpful to think of exercise as a high-yield savings account: every little bit makes a difference, it earns interest at a high rate, and the overall effect is greater than the sum of the initial contributions.
If you approach movement with this mindset, you’ll see many opportunities to make small deposits into your fitness account.
So, What exactly is a 7-Minute Workout?
It’s a response to studies that have proven that just 7 minutes of focused exercise can give your child the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of physical activity.
One misconception about working out is that it has to take a very long time to be effective. As someone who has exercised daily for the last thirty years, I know that it’s the quality of exercise that counts, not the duration. This workout has been designed to fit all the important bits into a very small package.
And because our brains love shortcuts and respond well to time and energy savers, this 7-minute workout is addictive. At least, we think so!
Components of Well-Balanced Exercise:
- Cardiovascular – speeding up your heart rate and breathing to stimulate blood flow and make your heart stronger, i.e., jumping jacks
- Toning – this means muscle strength and endurance, i.e., classical strength training exercises like lunges and situps
- Flexibility – the ability to move a joint through its complete range of motion, as well as muscle elasticity and length, i.e., lifting your arms all the way up during jumping jacks)
- Balance – the ability to stay in control of your body as you move in your surroundings, i.e., turning to look behind you, standing up while putting on your pants, yoga, high knees
- Coordination – the ability to move two or more body parts smoothly and efficiently, i.e., jumping jacks or bicycle exercise
You get all five in this one 7-minute workout!
And you know that habits are contagious! Do it with your kids! And it’s surprising what happens to the people around you when you start.

Timer
Music
What to do:
7 minutes. 7 exercises. Set the timer for 45 seconds on and 15 seconds off. It means you do each exercise for 45 seconds (or as long as you can keep going, working towards 45 seconds) and then take 15 seconds off to get into the next position.
After a few weeks, you might be able to keep doing each exercise for a minute (or more) without a break. Something to look forward to!
Final Words
Exercise is essential for children to maintain their physical and mental well-being. A brief session of exercise, even if it is limited to 7 minutes a day, can endow your child with improved self-confidence, health, and stress management. It can even make your child more attentive, organized, and diligent in their academic pursuits. Building a good habit into the day is a deeply valuable skill and a wonderful gift to give our kids.
Enjoy, and have fun!
