Yoga is not only a healthy physical exercise but also a powerful spiritual practice that can bring out the best in all of us.
A Word About Yoga
Yoga has been around for centuries, offering a natural and holistic way to heal the mind, body, and soul. It’s no surprise that many parents and educators have become interested in teaching their children this important life skill, turning each yoga practice into a powerful tool for personal transformation and growth.
But for many kids, taking that first step into the world of yoga can be intimidating. That’s why it’s more important than ever to make sure that kids interested in yoga receive the support and affirmation they need to make their journey a successful one. How about Disney yoga?!
Positive Affirmations
The positive affirmations I include with each pose below are a combination of motivation and inspiration – intended to encourage and inspire each kid, remind them of the lessons learned in Disney movies, and show them how to apply them in everyday life.
Whether your kids are experienced yogis or just starting out, these affirmations can help to remind them of the amazing power within their reach. Every time they practice, they take the opportunity to trust in their inner wisdom and free themselves from any doubts or fear.
This simple act of self-affirmation and inner exploration is an effective and easy way to recognize and tap into one’s own inner strength and potential. As you guide kids, remind them to release any judgment or criticism and remember to be kind and gentle to themselves. This will create a more inviting and supportive environment that can help them turn this practice into a powerful journey of transformation and self-discovery.
Integrating positive affirmations into practice is more than just another way to express self – it’s a way to tap into the unlimited power that resides within each and every one of us. Whether you’re practicing in your living room, on the beach, or in a classroom, don’t forget to breathe deeply. This powerful act can help to open your heart and bring your awareness to the present moment – all while strengthening your connection to your inner self and the world around you.
Remember, it’s not about being perfect – it’s about honoring and trusting your own journey.
Start off your sequence with a “Magic Carpet Ride” from Aladdin, beautifully embodied in the yoga push-up. Keep your tummy tight as you lower your chest to hover above the floor. Hug your elbows in toward your body and keep them pointing straight back. Feel a nice lift in your chest, just like Aladdin and Jasmine soaring through the night sky. Think or say an affirmation: I love myself just as I am.
Next, take flight with Peter Pan in the Superman pose. Start by laying on your belly with your arms out in front of you, then lift your head, chest, thighs, and feet up. Smile – you are flying! Allow yourself to be carried away to Neverland, free from the confines of adult responsibilities. I’m filled with energy and excitement.
Transition into Pluto waving his tail in the air, perfectly mimicked in the downward-facing dog pose. Make an upside-down V with your body while pulling the shoulders away from your body and keeping the head in alignment with the spine. Feel the playful energy and loyalty of Mickey’s beloved pet course through you as you slightly “wag your tail” in the air. I’m full of natural energy.
Step into the glass slippers of Cinderella with the dancer’s pose. Embody the grace and elegance of the princess at the ball, preparing for her enchanting dance with Prince Charming. Press into your grounding foot, and hold on to the other foot with the same-sided hand as you tip forward. If your balance is not good, do the dancer’s pose near the wall or hold on to something sturdy. I’m worthy of beautiful endings and exciting beginnings.
In the puppy pose, melt your heart towards the floor as you channel the heart-warming scene from Lady and the Tramp. Puppies love to stretch, and this pose extends the body both upward and outward at the same time. Keep the knees directly under the hips and the hands shoulder-width apart. Make cute puppy noises and wag your puppy tail from left to right while in the pose. If it’s comfortable, rest your forehead on the floor. Happiness is within me.
Inspired by The Lion King, let out a mighty roar in the cat-cow pose. On your hands and knees, drop your belly towards the floor as you lift your chin and chest towards the sky (cow pose). Then, round your back as you push the floor away with your hands and drop your chin (cat pose). Embrace the power of Simba, feeling your strength and courage growing. I’m strong and powerful.
Dive underwater with Ariel in the mermaid pose. Keep your torso lifted and grow tall through the top of your head to lengthen your spine. Lift the same arm as the leg in front towards the sky as you open your heart. Experience the longing and curiosity of The Little Mermaid, reaching out for the unknown from the world under the sea. Breathe deeply, and repeat on the second side. Curiosity fills my life with adventure.
Channel the enigmatic beauty of Rapunzel with an eagle pose. Just like the princess’s long, twisted locks, feel your arms and legs entwined, building strength, balance, and flexibility. Keep your tummy engaged and your shoulders down as you wobble and re-stabilize, looking for balance. Repeat on the other side. I overcome my fears by getting out of my comfort zone.
Connect with the humorous charm of Princess and the Frog through the frog pose. Squat down with your fingertips on the floor. Keep your hands on the floor as you straighten your legs. Return to the squatting position, letting the relaxed and joyful vibe wash over you. Anything I give attention to grows and flourishes.
In the fish pose, embody the legendary Sword in the Stone. Extend your legs long and point your toes like a sword. Lean back on your elbows and lift your chest up, letting the head rest lightly on the mat. I can trust myself to handle anything. Feel the power and energy, just about to pull out the magical sword.
Set sail on the royal ship from Frozen in the boat pose. Balance on your sit bones, keeping your spine straight. Your chest should be open, and your shoulder blades drawn down and away from your ears. Try to stay in the pose for five breaths. Let Elsa and Anna’s adventurous spirit inspire you, embracing the journey towards the unknown. I’m letting go of things that hold me back.
Finally, lay down in the corpse pose for Sleeping Beauty. Allow yourself to drift into a peaceful, restful state, just like Princess Aurora under the spell. I trust in the process of my life.
