At the time, I had intended for my kids to go through a Learning Through Woodworking course as part of our Waldorf curriculum. But naturally, once we started the course, they instantly wanted to hammer something all the time!
As luck would have it, autumn rolled around and presented us with the perfect opportunity to find a safer way for my kids to practice their hammering skills.
Pumpkin skin is much more yielding than wood, which means less sliding, less resistance, and a smaller chance of getting hurt.
In other words, hammering nails into pumpkins seemed like a much safer and equally engaging alternative to the woodworking activities my children had previously undertaken. Not only did it offer a chance for my kids to continue honing their hammering technique, but it also provided an educational experience in a way that seamlessly blended with the spirit of the season.

How to Do Pumpkin Nail Hammering
By incorporating nail hammering into your pumpkin-centered activities, your children will not only have a blast but also learn valuable skills and gain a deeper appreciation for the world of science.

One pumpkin per child
Hammer (I have a small one from this set for my youngest and a regular-size hammer for my older kids)
What to do
1. Getting ready
Place the pumpkin on a flat surface, such as a table, a wooden board, or (my favorite) outside on the deck or a sidewalk. Your goal is to choose a surface that provides stability and prevents any rolling or wobbling during the activity. I’m also a big fan of keeping messes outside:)
Safety goggles are recommended to protect your child’s eyes from any flying debris if they get overenthusiastic 🙂
2. Introduction to hammers
Guide your child to hold the hammer firmly, gripping it near the end of the handle for better control. But don’t insist if they prefer to grip the handle closer to the front because it’s still too heavy for them.
Encourage them to take their time and aim carefully, focusing on hitting the nail head accurately.
3. Describe and Observe
Instruct your child to strike the nail’s head squarely, ensuring it penetrates the pumpkin’s flesh but not so hard that it breaks the pumpkin.
Ask, what’s happening? Do nails resist going in? Which nails are easier to hammer, larger ones or smaller ones?
Point out the texture and density of the pumpkin’s flesh as the nail pierces through it, gaining insights into the unique characteristics of organic materials.
