Halloween is not just about costumes and candy; it’s an entire season that encompasses a variety of festivities and traditions. From haunted houses and pumpkin patches to spooky movie marathons and ghost books, the month of October is brimming with excitement and anticipation.
But to truly immerse ourselves in the spirit of Halloween, we need more than just visual elements – we need hands-on projects that captivate our senses. That’s where slime comes in.
Slime is a perfect Halloween project. Its gooey texture and vibrant colors embody the spooky nature of the holiday. Kids, and even adults, can’t resist its irresistible allure. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to keep little ones entertained for a while.
When you’re making slime with your kids, you’re not just mixing ingredients – you’re creating a magical potion that brings joy and excitement. From choosing the colors to adding special elements like glitter or plastic spiders, every step is an opportunity for your child’s imagination to soar.
The process of making slime can also be a valuable learning experience. It introduces children to the concept of measuring and following instructions, all while engaging their senses and fostering creativity. Plus, there’s something satisfying about watching the ingredients transform before your eyes, turning from a liquid into a stretchy, slimy substance reminiscent of Halloween monsters and creatures.
So, if you are looking for fun things to do with kids, try making slime. Not only will it provide hours of play, but it will also bring the spirit of Halloween to life in a whole new way. So grab your cauldron, put on your witch’s hat, and let’s get slimy!

School glue (We used Elmer’s Clear Glue)
Liquid starch (you can find Sta-Flo in the laundry aisle of your grocery store)
Black acrylic paint (I always keep this one in the house for our arts and crafts projects)
Warm water
Bowl and spoon
(Optional) Glitter and other Halloween mix-ins
What to do
1. Mix glue with water
In a large bowl, add 1 cup glue (or 5 oz container of clear Elmer’s glue) and ½ cup warm water, and mix well.
2. Mix in black paint
Add a squirt of black acrylic paint and mix until combined.
3. Add liquid starch
Pour in ½ cup of liquid starch, and stir well. Here, you immediately begin to see the slime forming into a gooey blog.
4. Stir
Stir well until your slime pulls away from the sides of the bowl and the liquid is gone.
Keep mixing until the desired consistency.
Add sprinkles if you wish.
Enjoy your slime!
The Science Behind the Activity
At its core, slime is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means it doesn’t behave like a typical liquid or solid. Instead, it exhibits properties of both depending on the force applied to it. When left undisturbed, slime appears to flow like a liquid, but when pressure is applied, or when it’s handled vigorously, it stiffens and feels more solid.
The key ingredients that give slime its unique properties are glue and a slime activator, such as liquid starch (or laundry borax). Glue is made up of long chains of molecules called polymers, which form a liquid-like substance. When the slime activator is added to the glue, it causes a chemical reaction that links these polymer chains together, creating a cross-linked network. This network allows the slime to stretch and flow, giving it its characteristic slimy texture.
The addition of coloring agents, glitter, and other fun additives allows you and your kids to customize the appearance of the slime. These additions don’t affect the science behind slime-making but make it even more visually appealing and exciting.
How to Extend Slime Play
One of the most delightful aspects of slime is its unique texture. Encourage your kids to explore the tactile joy of slime by squishing, stretching, and squeezing it between their fingers.
They can experiment with different ways to manipulate the slime, such as rolling it into a ball or flattening it like a pancake.
The sensory experience of slime can be both calming and stimulating, making it a great tool for sensory playtime.
Slime offers endless opportunities for creative play. Encourage your children to use their imagination and incorporate the slime into their pretend play scenarios. They can create a slime monster or use it as a prop for storytelling.
Slime can also be combined with other toys, such as creepy skeleton hands, plastic dinosaurs, or cars, to create exciting, slimy adventures. The possibilities are as limitless as your child’s imagination.
