If you are still looking for a perfect online math curriculum, this review of CTCMath is for you. I received a complimentary one-year Homeschool Membership for review purposes and I’m happy to share our experience.
CTC Math is an online subscription math program, created by Patrick Murray, a math teacher and a father of ten children. The program covers every grade from Kindergarten through high school and is designed to be a full math curriculum for grades K-8. The higher grades need to be supplemented by additional resources.
CTCMath Homeschool Membership gives access to over a thousand lessons and diagnostic tests. Membership allows access to all grades and levels, so you can review previously learned concepts at any time. You have the freedom to start with a placement test or just start in the beginning to make sure you didn’t miss anything. The website is very easy to navigate.
You start by picking a grade, which is divided into different parts. And each part is divided into a number of different topics. Every topic consists of a number of comprehensive lessons that can be done out of sequence or consequentially. Lessons are presented in a video format.
The video lessons can be fast-forwarded, rewound, and paused. They combine pretty graphics and animation with easy to understand instructions. A small test of about ten questions follows the lesson.
When the answer is incorrect, children get a chance to go back and work through it again or look at the detailed answer.
How we used this program
It’s recommended that the program is used at least three times a week. My kids generally do not like computer learning, so we used our regular paper-and-manipulatives lessons most of the days, and supplemented with CTCMath on days when I needed a break or was busy preparing other lessons. In this manner, we got through 11 lessons. And I’m happy to say that my kids didn’t complain about using CTCMath! In fact, twice they even asked my permission to do more than one lesson a day!
My older two kids used the program together. I didn’t care that my oldest was working below his grade level. It’s always good to review previously learned material. Besides, our current math goal is not to shove in as many mathematical concepts as can stick, but to create a deeper understanding of number sense and develop an appreciation of patterns. I liked that my kids collaborated their answers and generally put a lot of thought into each lesson.
What we thought
If you have a child who responds well to computer-based learning, give CTCMath a try. It’s the best program for learning math at home we tried so far. Even though our main manner of learning is not computer-based, I like to have an online backup plan for 1-2 days a week when I need a break. And we are definitely sticking with CTCMath for this year. And this is saying a lot because I’m very picky about online learning and use only the highest quality materials. Most heart-warming is that my kids responded well to the lessons, got 100% on most tests, and had fun doing it.
There are so many online subscription math programs out there, it’s enough to make your head spin. What did I personally like about CTCMath?
Five Reasons for Choosing CTCMath
- Graphics. Colorful illustrations appeal to kids and keep them interested. They are not distracting but do just enough to demonstrate the concept.
- Great instructions. Pleasant voice of a tutor explains each concept simply so that kids have no trouble understanding it.
- Low cost. And we all know that expensive doesn’t mean better.
- Comprehensive. It starts with basic math and goes all to way to trigonometry. I can always find a topic my kids need to learn or reinforce.
- Low demand on a parent. Kids can do it independently and even if you love teaching your kids, it is good to take a break once in a while, and let someone else explain math concepts to your children.
And of course, most importantly kids respond well to this program!
I want to mention additional resources that might be of interest to some parents but were not particularly important to me. There is a comprehensive Parents Section that allows you to monitor the progress of your students, look at the certificates of completion they earned, a number of lessons completed, test score for each lesson, and look at detailed summary reports.
