No surprise: We love reading books about trucks. So we jumped at a chance to review a new book by Asia Citro, an educator, mother of two children, author, blogger, and also a children’s book publisher.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own. We only review on the blog things that we love 🙂
Vroom Vroom Garbage Truck is a bright and sturdy board book about a day in the life of a garbage truck. The story is simple, but noisy onomatopoeia words take it from a basic story into a delightful feast for any truck lover’s ears.
“Whir! Bash! Zip! Flump! Slam! Whoosh! Zing!”
The day in the life of a garbage truck holds many sounds. It starts with the click of headlights on a dark and rainy morning. Then it follows the truck through multiple garbage pick-ups as the sun rises. It ends at night with the final sigh, click, and “shhhhhh.”
The story has some humorous touches when the truck hits the bump in the road or stops to let a family of ducks cross the street. Our favorite is when we see a man “splishing, splashing” his coffee in an attempt to get his garbage to the truck before it vrooms vrooms away.
My toddler likes to repeat the sounds and the fun words in this book: “Bump!” Luckily, her ten-year-old brother doesn’t seem to get tired of repeating loud truck noises for her benefit. (He says he likes to make her happy, but I suspect it allows him to act silly without losing face).
If you wonder why my toddler looks like an onion, it’s because she likes to wear ALL of her favorite outfits at the same time.
The text is brief but effective. Each page has a few words that sound like the actions they describe. There are some repetitive sounds. “Vroom vroom vroom vroom vroom-a-room vroom.”
The book is the right length and number of words for toddlers. But it also works for my 5-year-old who is just beginning to read on his own. He tries to sound out the sounds the truck makes as it goes along its day. His favorite page is “boop boop boop boop boop boop whoosh.”
He is dressed for his gymnastics class.
The fun and vibrant illustrations by Troy Cummings have a cartoon-like quality and bring the story to life.
This adorable board book became an instant classic in our house. If you are looking for a new board book, look no further. Your kids will have fun with Vroom Vroom Garbage Truck.
